Saving Precious Minutes With A Document Camera

My students need a document camera.

My third graders really want to learn. However, they often start off a great deal behind their peers because they are all learning English as a second language. Imagine coming into the classroom with a vocabulary of, most likely, less than dozen English words when others their age have 4,500-12,000 word vocabularies. They have the added disadvantage of living in a high poverty area. It is my job to help them catch up to their peers as fast as I can. Now, all the technology in the world will not make them better learners, but excellent technology along with a teacher who knows how to use it to his students greatest benefit - that's priceless. I want my students to go to college - I tell them this all the time. I can't wait for one of my first students to come back to me and tell me they just graduated from college. I'll probably have a hard time holding back the tears of joy.

As my donors, many of you have helped me provide the most technologically advanced classroom in my school, next to the computer lab, of course. I spend many hours every week trying to find the best ways to harness the power of the technology in my classroom. Sometimes it is a lesson in frustration, but most of the time, I can create engaging lessons that hold my students attention. I have found the more engaging the activity, the more effectively the learning takes hold in their long term memory. I have found that the best way I learn is by teaching. I figure if that is true for me, it is probably true for my students. Interestingly enough, if a student teaches them, sometimes the students retain the information better! Okay, okay - I said SOMETIMES! Don't get any crazy ideas!

My students would greatly benefit from their classroom having a document camera. A document camera differs from an overhead projector in that it actually provides an image of the objects onto the screen. An overhead projector requires transparencies as it can only show shadows. A document camera only requires the page I can print on a regular printer. It has the added benefit providing a true look at images - including full color pictures. Imagine using an overhead projector to teach students about money - you would only be able to see the "shadow" of the coins. With a document camera, you get a full color image of the actual coins and bills blown up much larger than life onto the screen. It is so much easier to establish the difference between pennies, dimes and nickels when you can see the colors. Also, instead of having to use a transparency and have to wipe it off and discolor desks and fingers with transparency pens (not to mention the incredibly annoying smudges that occur with being left-handed!), I can use the exact same worksheet and a regular pen or pencil just like my students do. Oh, I tingle with pleasure at the thought of having one of these!

Donors have been a powerful force in my classroom. You have funded writing-based art projects, reading center CD players, and a classroom student response system in the past. I have been so honored to receive these donations. My students absolutely delight in each new item that comes into the classroom. And, of course, they practice their "thank you letter" writing skills in a real world way - it's not just for pretend! Help me again with your tax deductible donation. You will continue to impact my students in ways that you cannot fathom. Thank you in advance!
