My Students

Our students come from a once thriving, coal-mining community that has been devastated by the loss of income and industry. With over 82% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, these children are in great need of a high-quality education. Education and shared resources will be their ticket out of poverty.

Because we are from a high-poverty area, most of my students do not have access to high-quality reading materials at home.

As their school librarian, it is extremely important for me to instill a love of reading and literature as often as possible during their library class. Many students have told me they do not like to read and some have never read a complete chapter book from cover to cover. My answer to them is always, "You have not found the right book to get you started."

My Project

My students will learn to be more thoughtful and responsible when using money. We will use the reading materials provided by this project to have conversations about the way people handle their money.

Budgeting and planning leads to more thoughtful and responsible choices for how we use our money.

Students will identify why having a budget and keeping records of their spending and saving habits helps them make better financial choices.

We will use the moon jar to demonstrate how to set aside money for all three categories: saving, spending and sharing. By using this as a visual, students will study further about the differences between wants and needs.

My students will learn two main concepts from this lesson: 1. Money can be used in three ways: to spend, to save, and to give. They will also learn about charitable giving and 2. Money can be spent for things that we need and for things that we want but don’t really need.
