Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are simply incredible. They are the most hardworking, kind, and determined readers, writers, and mathematicians despite some of the odds stacked against them. Each of them brings unique experiences, backgrounds, and cultures to our classroom.
As a title I school, most of my students get their basic needs met during the school day.
96% of our students qualify for Free and Reduced lunch and many need access to clothes and food outside of the school day. My students are also mostly multilingual learners as 69% of them are learning and growing in more than 1 language.
This diversity unites us together and makes us a strong community. We believe that the ROAD to success starts at our school. We are Respectful, Open-minded, Accountable, and Determined to shape a successful future.
My Project
Nine and ten-year-olds have a lot of energy! They like to wiggle, wobble, tap, and shake ALL DAY LONG. When sitting at a conventional desk or table, this can be quite the distraction--for themselves and their classmates around them. Having appropriate learning spots in the classroom where they are able to be their energetic selves not only helps them be more comfortable, but they are able to focus on their learning!
My students are more engaged, willing to take risks, and focused when they have the choice to sit where they learn best.
We have spent time "trying out" each type of seat in our classroom, but we need a larger variety of options! We would like a standing table with stools, so mathematicians working on a math game can stand and work on a hard surface. Additionally, wobble stools provide a place to sit and literally wobble while working on an activity or listening to a lesson. Finally, we would love some cozy chairs to sit in with our lap desks. These offer a more cushioned space to read or write a thrilling narrative.
Have you ever thought about where you sit to be the most focused? Where did you sit the last time you read a book? Everyone has a different answer! This is because we, as adults, are able to choose where we feel fits us best. My students deserve this choice, too, as they learn to be better readers, writers, and mathematicians.
