Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Please FEED us! FEED is the dystopian tale of a future culture saturated with media messages to buy, buy, buy - waitaminnut, that's our culture now! All the more reason to inoculate our students and give them the media savvy they need to recognize manipulation. Help empower my students!

My students are primarily Latino children of poverty from the urban sprawl of Los Angeles.

They are bright, clever, charming, and ready to become independent thinkers, and to ask my favorite question: why? We study Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, and I want to pair it with Anderson's seminal work lampooning our culture of consumption and electronic isolation - a culture to which my students are all too vulnerable. Further, too many of my students don't like to read; it's so important to introduce them to literary texts that speak directly to their experiences. Without literacy, they are without power.

My Project

Research has proven that reading a text while listening to a proficient, fluent speaker reading that text greatly supports literacy growth; hence the professionally read audio book. I already read Fahrenheit 451 to them and want to give them a variety of experience (e.g., another voice). Once finished, we will create our own "Adbuster" type counter-culture messages based on our literary analysis (which is why we need the paper & markers).

The freedom of a democracy is dependent on critical thinkers - help me launch the next generation of skeptical, savvy, conscientious citizens.

But unless my students learn to value reading, they can never take that responsibility. Help us with an important and relevant text that students LOVE to read.
