My students are primarily Latino children of poverty from the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. They are bright, clever, charming, and ready to become independent thinkers, and to ask my favorite question: why? We study Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, and I want to pair it with Anderson's seminal work lampooning our culture of consumption and electronic isolation - a culture to which my students are all too vulnerable. Further, too many of my students don't like to read; it's so important to introduce them to literary texts that speak directly to their experiences. Without literacy, they are without power.
