I teach on the Navajo reservation in a very isolated community where gangs, drugs, teenage pregnancy, and domestic violence are the norm. My eighth-grade language-arts students rarely hold a new book. They rarely admit that reading is fun, and they very rarely have anything to read at home. Still, my students are hooked on--no, obsessed with--fantasy stories.
Dwarfs, goblins, elves, wizards, time travel--my students LOVE fantasy novels. Perhaps it's the escape these novels provide from the real world, or maybe it's the sheer creativity of this genre that draws my students. Whatever the reason, my students have displayed an enormous interest in this genre. Unfortunately, our scant classroom library has very, very few fantasy or sci-fi novels. Thus my students often go home empty-handed on an afternoon that could be filled with delectable reading.
In order to satisfy this craving for books, we need to fortify our class library with sci-fi and fantasy stories. My students love the challenge of finishing a series, so we've requested the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, the "Chronicles of Narnia" series, and the "Golden Compass" series, as well as a few Harry Potter books. We hope to build our library over time, but these staples will enable my students to immerse themselves in literary joy.
My students are rarely excited about school. They are all extremely at risk of everything from dropping out to pregnancy to alcoholism. Eighth grade is a seminal milestone for every kid, but my students are truly on the brink of either disaster or success. This wonderfully uncanny love my students have shown for fantasy novels is truly a godsend and needs to be nurtured.
