Santa's Elves Needed For Some Academic Cheer! HO, HO, HO!
My students need a tablet to support individualized (and PRIVATE) remedial learning. With the tablet, students can take it to a private place to work on their own level.
Have you ever struggled in school and were embarrassed when classmates saw you working on something "easy"? Many of my special education students face that everyday. With a tablet, they can do remedial support activities away from prying eyes. They will be able to feel safe and secure to learn.
My students are in a classroom with regular and special education students.
My special education students become very self-conscious in such a setting when they quickly realize that there are students who are far more advanced then they are. They want to learn so bad but are embarrassed to work on the classroom computers that can be seen by everyone.
My school is in a rural agricultural area. Economically disadvantaged enrollment is at 52.6% and the state average is only at 40.5%. In such a high poverty area, many students come to school already behind the average student. These students face extreme hurdles to try and catch up. They love our school and many times cry when school has a long vacation.
My Project
Wow! With a portable tablet, my special education students will be able to grab a pillow or stool and go where ever they want to for complete privacy. No one will be looking over their shoulder checking out what they are doing. They can curl up in a corner or hallway. They could even go to their favorite teachers' or administrators' room to complete their objectives.
On the tablet, I will provide remedial reading and math applications that will increase their fundamental and basic skills they continue to lack in the third grade. The tablet would really motivate them to increase their writing skills. Who doesn't love the opportunity to curl up in a corner to write and add graphics to your writing piece?
One tablet to share with five special education students would be a challenge, but I could incorporate the use of the tablet with any behavior modification programs. Students can earn the privilege by decreasing any behavior occurrences.
The tablet will empower and encourage my students to rise above their challenges.
They will gradually have the security and power to work on their skills without others making snide remarks. They will no longer "hate" doing computer work for all to see. With more confidence, my students will want to work harder on their academics. When they begin to feel more secure about their skills, then they may more okay with others finding out about their struggles.
