My Students

I mostly teach 7th graders. My students come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. What I love about our school and students is that it is a wonderful mix of ideas and cultures. In my class, when students are working on a project, I love listening to the variety of perspectives students bring to the table. The end result of the project is better with input of greater variety. Every year, in regard to the student council, our students elect officers from all different backgrounds. It is wonderful to see such a diverse population working together.

My Project

The students are going to do a project in which they play the role of an entrepreneur. They are going to design, make and market a child's toy that is a mechanical movement. An example of a mechanical movement might be a dog that when a person rotates a shaft the dogs mouth opens and closes and his tail wags. Attached to the shaft are cams and the cams are what drives the mechanism for the mouth and tail. The computer controlled router is the tool needed to accurately cut out the toy parts.

Doing a project like this will give students an opportunity use high technology and incorporate several different workplace skills to accomplish a task.
