If a teacher has one or two printers in a classroom it is novelty. Students watch the printing in awe, but they never have an opportunity to interact with the technology. They do not make an authentic connection between designing an object, programming, problem solving and producing the object. Decent printers are becoming more affordable, but to have enough printers in a classroom that will allow all students to experience the technology is beyond the budget that I have. For this reason, I am seeking funding to purchase several 3D printers which will allow all my students access to the technology. Students are mesmerized by 3D printers. Kids come in before school and at lunch to see what’s printing. When they come in for class they gravitate to the 3D printers to watch. I have had a few students start teaching themselves to design objects using Sketch-up. I run an after-school program where a small group of students can start to learn to use the printers. I am amazed and thrilled with how quickly they have taken the knowledge and expanded upon it. They can start and run the machine by their selves. They can change the filament so they can print in a different color. In my 8th grade class, we make a project by cutting wood on the scroll saw; the kids are realizing they can design the parts on Sketch-up and print them on the 3D printer. 3D printers just don’t create plastic parts they create curiosity, a thirst for knowledge and creativity.
