I teach a class of twenty-four first graders at Woodlake Elementary in St. Tammany Parish. We love our literacy centers and try to incorporate all subjects into them. Our science center is a place where the children explore various animals and their habitats. This is an excellent center to promote interest in writing. Students draw the animal, create the habitat out of clay, and write about the animal. Children are learning how to write informational text, and don't ever realize they are working. I have animals for our science center, but would love to have a sand and water table so that the children may create the habitats of the animals we are studying. I can't help thinking that the more detailed of a habitat they are allowed to create, the more detailed their writing will be. They love to learn when it involves really digging their hands into something. Please help us to create meaningful habitats in our classroom!
