I have eighteen amazing pre-k students. They live in an urban area and face many struggles and challenges. School is a very important place for them. It is a safe place where they come to grow, learn and explore. I truly love teaching them and helping them to build their foundation for future learning. They absorb new information like sponges and have an excitement for life. They always keep me laughing with their funny stories and sayings. I look forward to watching them grow and learn this school year.
My Project
My students need materials for the sand and water table area. As students utilize this area, they are enhancing their physical, cognitive, and social skills. They are using and developing their fine motor skills as they shovel, pull, and build. They are extending their vocabulary by learning new words and talking about what they are experiencing. They are also problem solving, sharing and communicating. This sensory play is so important because it is stimulating neurons that fire and causing synapses to connect.
Sand and water play sets the foundation and prepares the brain for more complex concepts in math and science.
While students are playing in sand and water, they are actually exploring science and math topics. They are making predictions about which objects might sink or float and actually testing out their predictions. They are also pouring and filling different containers and using new math vocabulary such as empty and full. They may appear to be just playing, but they are actually growing their brains and promoting higher levels of cognition.
