Salmon In The Classroom

My project needs the aquarium maintenance materials and the materials to set up a new fish tank in order to hatch salmon eggs in the tank that I have received a grant for.

Farwell Elementary is a rural K-4 school where I teach 4th grade. We are a close 4th grade team of teachers. This project would be part of my classroom but shared with all the other classes in the school that would like to stop in to visit throughout the school year. The Michigan Council of Trout Unlimited has a program for classrooms called "Salmon in the Classrooms". The students participate in hatching salmon eggs in the classroom, raising the fish, and releasing them into a nearby river. The program has a complete teacher's guidebook with sample teaching ideas for having a successful Salmon hatching. I have received a grant for the tank and the aquatic chiller for a total of $750.00. Now I need to have the supplies to set up the tank and the aquatic maintenance materials. I'm so excited that our classroom will be a hatchery where we learn from the development of the fish and discuss how environmental issues have increased the need for such places. We will need to study water quality and study what makes a suitable watershed for our fish. We will participate in a river release and clean up day. Students don't have much experience of just doing something for someone else just because the other person matters. In this case, students will be doing it because nature matters. This will be a direct connection to the field trip we take to a state park where students learn to be responsible anglers. Students will get to return to the river an important element of the food chain and river resource. The program and the instruction they receive will hopefully instill a sense of responsibility to be caring and to take an active part in the world around them. There is a great demand for this activity since I have found over the years that homes are so busy with every day working routines including many single parent families that students aren't always taught about fishing and caring for nature. I feel that this has become my responsibility as an educator to shape and mold the citizens of tomorrow, the carers of our future. They need to be an active part in their world. I would like to start this by having my classroom be a fish hatchery and I need your help.
