This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The Holocaust should have been a once in the history of the world event. It wasn't. However, the further away from the event that we get, the less our youth know about this horrifying example of hate, intolerance, and indifference. To combat this, my students complete a project where they read "Maus".
By sharing the generational effects of the Holocaust, "Maus" shows students that what happens to them matters; what happened to their parents and grandparents matters to them; what they do (and do not do) matters.
My students cover the spectrum as readers: below grade level, at grade level, above grade level... And the graphic novel allows readers of all levels to engage at different levels with text and information. "Maus" has helped my students develop skills in empathy, reading, and empowerment.
