Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students live in the neighborhood around our school. They feel safe in school, they feel challenged in school and they feel success in school. Some of the students love our school so much that younger siblings and cousins attend when they're old enough. Our school is very student and family-focused with extremely dedicated teachers and a support staff that always puts the needs of our students first.

Our school is a place where positive learning experiences occur each day.

Teachers work to bring learning experiences out of the building into the immediate and larger neighborhood of NYC. As a result, we provide students with learning opportunities that help them to expand what they learn inside the school building.

Teachers, staff, and students work together to define, work towards, and achieve success in learning. With the help of teachers, staff, and peers, students work to overcome any obstacle they face. The success for one student may look different than it does for another student but all success is celebrated.

My Project

My AP Environmental Science students have been learning about various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and have deepened their understanding of these ecosystems through field work. They have measured above ground biomass in order to calculate the carbon sequestration of our local forested areas; They have conducted bio assessments as well as physical and chemical tests of local lakes to assess the health of the ecosystems; and they have compared this data over several years to determine the degree to which our local ecosystems have changed. Sailing on the Clearwater will help my students to expand their understanding of ecosystems to include estuaries - one of the most productive ecosystems on Earth. In addition to the various tests they will conduct on board, they will learn about the history of the environmental movement that helped return the Hudson to a healthy, viable ecosystem. This sail will help my students to see first hand how local, grassroots activism has and continues to affect change. With education and connections between groups of people this ability to heal ecosystems and communities can be passed on and sustained for generations.

Every time my students are able to learn outside of the classroom they remember more, make more connections and build a larger reservoir of skills and knowledge.

This seemingly simple 3-hour sail on a river they've seen their entire lives, will make an enormous impact. Through their observations of the physical and biological components of the Hudson and conversations with environmentalists and scientists on board, they will make connections between their small environment and the larger biosphere of Earth.
