Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The general chemistry program at our high school is under an overhaul of the science curriculum to enhance the realistic challenges that students will be facing once they leave the high school bubble. The students in Master G's General Chemistry course is an unorthodox and unprecedented program at our high school that emphasizes learning to reach proficiency in analytical and critical-thinking skills. The class consists of approximately 32 students each period for a total student enrollment of approximately 160 students. Most students come from neighboring Lake Elsinore, but also the surrounding areas of Canyon Lake, Corona, and Wildomar.
Students are uneasy about taking general chemistry, but the primary goal is to have them realize that success in a class like chemistry is to maintain a growth mindset mentality and realize the real-world connections a class like chemistry can have in their lives.
I believe in every student's ability to succeed by taking a rigorous, challenging, realistic, and authentic project-based approach to learning in lieu of traditional approaches. We don't want students grasping for answers, but having the ability to state with confidence why they are able to come up with them in a particular way.
My Project
As a teacher for two years at TCHS, I inherited a classroom that had lab safety goggles and aprons, but as many of my students have exclaimed, most of these goggles and aprons were very uncomfortable and prone to being broken. After trying the equipment on myself, I tended to side with my students on this. Our department has been able to fund the aprons, but we were able to only secure a few new goggles.
The lab safety equipment will help student proceed onto major STEM projects as well.
Even though we focus on chemistry the most, we bridge most of our experiments to other STEM-based disciplines especially engineering design; all of which require safety.
It is legally required that students wear the appropriate lab equipment to be safe; the current equipment potentially poses a hazard if this equipment is not replaced. We have a tendency to borrow lab goggles from other classrooms just to ensure everyone meets the requirements, but this process is not sustainable for long. We are also in need of new disposable Nitrile gloves especially when our students deal with corrosive chemicals.
Considering safety is my number one priority, this is one project that I consider to be of utmost importance. Students will not only be able to enrich their learning, but will be safe in the process as well.
