My students need a metal detector wand.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We have a very versatile student population. Our school takes on the motto "it takes a village". At our school students help students, teachers help, community members help, outside organizations are intricate as well. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads below grade level and learning is not the first thing they come to school to do. It is here that they seek refuge first and learning sometimes 2nd 3rd or 4th, but they prosper behind these walls.
Each day students enter a threshold of a place that meets basic needs which are not always meant on the outside, those that come a little more prepared face the dangers of the community they live in daily to get to and from school.
We have metal detectors, but so many things set it off and don’t provide an accurate assessment of the situation.
Security wands (superwand metal detector) offers a) a deterrent from bringing things that are dangerous b) offer an added level of security and isolate the the situation. Safety EVERYDAY is our first priority and education falls into place. We currently have wands and they are no longer functioning, students have been heard saying "anybody could bring something here" often sounding concerned. We want to remove that worry as much as possible from their lives.
We
Security Wands also assist in security with individuals visiting our school. Once a person walks through the metal detector, it becomes hard to pinpoint what may be causing the warning. The wand localizes this, and has often lead to identifying students or adults with weapons. Thus, preventing more escalated situations or potential dangerous situations that impact the school and our student learning and success
