My Students
My students are from a diverse Chicago neighborhood full of English language learners attending a public school. All of my students qualify for free lunch. A variety of cultures are represented, languages spoken, and ideas shared within my classroom. Through hard work and dedication, my students continue to overcome obstacles, meeting, and exceeding grade-level expectations.
My inquisitive middle schoolers are growing up during one of the most unusual and worrisome times in education.
But, no matter the obstacle, my students are passionate about learning. Through relevant novel studies and research, we work together to develop the skills needed to meet the state standards and use this knowledge to affect positive change. I take pride in the responsibility my students feel for their own educations.
My Project
Chicago has announced plans for students and teachers to participate in hybrid-learning this fall, meaning teachers will be in-person with different pods of students four days a week. Understandably, I am extremely worried about how this decision will endanger the lives of my students and myself. 15 students and at least two teachers in a classroom will not make it possible to keep all bodies 6 feet apart. And I am anxious about sharing airspace for six hours a day in an enclosed space. Regardless, teachers are problem-solvers and that is what this project is all about.
These materials will help me hold class outdoors so students and teachers are safer being in the open air and having the space to maintain 6 feet of distancing.
I am thrilled to be able to teach my students in person this year, but insist that we do it as safely as we can and that means being outdoors.
