Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

This material will assist in making my social work office a safe space that is comfortable and supportive. This allows for the staleness of generic school rooms to be softened by a rug and decorations to support and value diversity. It is important for students of color to see diversity, feel comfortable in the school setting but especially in the social workers office. My office is a place where students share difficult traumas, work through educational struggles, and learn how to be good humans.

These supplies help facilitate diversity, inclusivity in a calm and therapeutic setting.

I like to challenge students to use materials to express themselves. This is expression from art (drawing, painting, and writing) to use of fidgets, legos/blocks, and toys to process life situations. Self-expression and learning social/emotional skills is key to helping student growth and success in life.

Learning new techniques to express themselves can facilitate change. Change helps students in their confidence and academics. The use of art is new for many students in my school as we focus a lot on strong academics. This is a place to learn new skills to apply to their learning. Use of the conversations starters, boundary discussion, and coping skills while with peers is also a great way for students to learn needed social skills and self-regulation.
