This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title 1 middle school with a high-needs population. The students at our school come with challenges, trauma, and cultural challenges due to their recent arrival to the country.
Our students have a hard time adjusting to middle school with more added academic, social, and emotional pressures.
Students have to learn how to navigate social media, family home life, friendship changes, physical changes, all at once.
Many of our students do not have a safe space at home.
My Project
When you are having a hard time, would you rather sit in a hard plastic chair or a comfortable couch or bean bag? When students come to the counseling center, we want them to feel at home. Students often think they are in trouble when they come to the counseling center. We want to debunk those feelings. Students should feel welcome and safe to express their emotions without restriction.
Part of that includes having them sit in a comfortable position rather than feeling tense in a hard chair.
A sofa and bean bags in the office will allow students to be comfortable when speaking with the counselors, especially when they are in distress.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
