I have a class of 24 gifted and talented students. The class is comprised of 18 boys and 6 young ladies. The students excel in reading, Math, and Science, and represent the top 10% academically of our grade level.
With 18 high energy gifted boys, you can imagine the level of activity in our classroom.
I also have several students with diagnosed ADHD, and one student with Asperger's. These students require alternate/flexible seating options to remain safe in our classroom.
My Project
The flexible seating options that I have selected will not only help to keep my students safe, but will enhance their engagement and ability to focus in the classroom. I have several students that are bouncers and chair tippers. Several times a day students are falling out of their chairs, one even bringing the entire desk with him. Not only is this very unsafe, but incredibly distracting to the class. With the weighted balls, and wobble chairs students will be able to safely bounce and tip without being disruptive. The chair and desk bands will allow students to place their feet either on the bottom of their chair, or toward the front of their desk safely, allowing some bouncing, or pushing movement. Brain research shows that movement helps brain activity. By providing the students with an opportunity to safely move around, they will be able to focus on their learning as well as the activities and discussions our class is having. More learning will be taking place, and student engagement will be greatly improved.
