After 20 years teaching 4th grade general education in rural communities, I am currently teaching a class of 28 of the top students (gifted) in the 4th grade class. While the diversity of academic ability is not as significant, I still work to teach my students the skills of character, leadership, collaboration, and responsibility on a daily basis. Nearly half of the students in our district receive free and reduced lunch so many parents do not have the money for new books, educational materials, or technology (Internet or computers). Some do not even have transportation to drive their children to the local library. The schools may be their only opportunity to develop the essential skills so necessary for their success in this technological age.
