Safe Maker Tools for Student Engineers

Help me give my students a kid-safe cardboard cutting tool so they can independently build prototypes, models, and inventions during STEM and STEM Club.

My Project

My students are creative problem-solvers who love to build, test, and redesign their ideas. Whether they are in STEM Club or working on classroom STEM challenges, they are constantly sketching inventions, prototyping solutions, and tackling real-world problems through Project-Based Learning. What I love most about them is that they don’t just want to learn about engineers, they want to be engineers. To do that, they need access to real tools that help turn cardboard and imagination into working prototypes.

The ChompSaw will open up new levels of hands-on learning by giving students a safe, kid-friendly tool that allows them to cut and shape cardboard for their prototypes with accuracy and independence.

Without it, students often struggle to model their ideas because cutting thick cardboard with scissors is difficult, imprecise, and sometimes unsafe. The ChompSaw and its accessories will allow them to make straight cuts, angled cuts, circles, and scored folds, skills that are nearly impossible to teach without the right equipment. This is especially important as students move from “idea on paper” to three-dimensional prototypes that demonstrate how their inventions work.

My goal for this project is to equip students with age-appropriate tools that support real engineering and design practices. With the ChompSaw, students will be able to build more accurate, more complex, and more thoughtful prototypes during STEM challenges while working with greater independence and confidence. Most importantly, these tools will show students that they have the ability to turn those ideas into something real.
