Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Since I teach Pre-K, this is the first year of school for the majority of my students. As many of my students come into the school year nervous and uneasy, I want to provide a classroom and environment that is warm, inviting, engaging and safe!

Our principal, the teachers, and the entire school community have turned our school from a "failing" school into a school on the rise.

This year, our school will be a showcase school not just to those schools in our district but to others located throughout New York City.

Many of my students come from incredibly challenging homes. Ninety-nine percent of the school receives free lunch, and many of our students live in homeless shelters, foster homes, or just have trouble making ends meet. Despite these challenges, my students love to learn and love to be at school. With these materials, I feel as though my students will come into a classroom they can call home for the year.

My Project

Every school year I create a safe and quiet space for my students to go to if they are tired, sad, or just need a moment to collect themselves. This is one of the most important spaces in my classroom! It is important that this cozy space is inviting, colorful and comfortable for my students. The multi colorful pillows, the rug and the books will help my students when they need a moment to rest, or calm their bodies. Visuals are so important! For most of my students, this is their first year of school. This cozy corner will give my students the opportunity to give themselves a break if they need it in a space they will want to go to! Everyone needs a break once in a while, and this will be such an inviting space for them.
