S-O-S Cabinet: Helpful Items to Get Through Each Day
Help me give my students an S-O-S cabinet where they can have access to items that help them get through the day emotionally and physically - water, bandaids, stress balls, chapstick, snacks, deodorant, sanitary pads, etc!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is full of creative students who are eager to learn. Their passion and excitement that came into our virtual building this year, which has continued since online learning began in March, motivates me to be the best possible teacher for them. Many of our students look forward to our time together at school as it is a place where they can really focus on themselves. They come to school and now participate online to feel appreciated, develop friendships, and to challenge themselves to grow and be better students and well-rounded individuals.
My students love being part of my classroom because it's a place where they can feel important, comfortable, and have fun!
I strive so hard to make my students feel welcome in my classroom and make each student aware of the value they add to our classroom. As a result, they very much understand that they are an asset to our community. This belief motivates them to show up every day, on time and makes them excited about receiving a quality education. I work tirelessly to let my students know that I believe in them in hopes that they will also believe themselves.
My Project
An S-O-S cabinet in my classroom will allow me to house various items that students may need during the day. Many students struggle to focus in school because they are hungry or distracted by other issues that are taking place outside of the home. I want to eliminate these concerns. On any given day, a student may be in need of water or a healthy snack which can be provided and kept cool with the help of the mini fridge. Maybe he or she forgot to put on deodorant or cannot afford it and now feel he or she feels awkward being around other students - the SOS drawer can solve this, allowing the student to focus on their learning instead of their hygiene. It's possible that a student's lips or hands are chapped and cracking because they do not have lotion and chapstick at home, and now they are uncomfortable and struggling to focus in school - no problem.
With the S-O-S drawer, student's emotional, physical and mental needs can be met and students will feel more confident in their ability to get through the day, regardless of what issues may arise.
Teaching sixth grade, I have many students who are getting their periods for the first time and are embarrassed to ask their parents or teachers for sanitary pads or possibly cannot afford them. It also goes without saying that 12 year olds face daily struggles and emotional challenges that can without a doubt throw them for a loop or anger them, and could benefit from the ability to pick up a stress ball and decompress while sitting in class. I want students to feel safe and comfortable in my classroom and know that while learning is important, their social and emotional needs are equally as essential.
