Rural Maine to New York City! Help Us Get to Broadway!

My 25 music students need your help to get us from our small coastal town in Maine to see the Broadway Show "Wicked" in NYC. They will see their first Broadway show ever and begin a lifetime of searching for fantastic musical performances!

A huge majority of my students have never been past the borders of Maine. I live and work in a small, hardworking coastal town and have the joy-filled pleasure of teaching Instrumental Music to students in grades 3-12! I believe that an appreciation of the performing arts helps students see and feel that there is so much more out “there” and gives them a well-rounded and more compassionate view of the world. (Where am I? In the group picture of some of us, I am in the bottom right hand corner.)

In talking to community members about our NYC trip, I consistently have heard the same comment: "Going to a Broadway Show in New York City is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these kids!" This one sentence makes me want to stand up straight and scream from the rooftops, “ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME? NO NO NO!!! THEY HAVE LONG LIVES AHEAD OF THEM WHERE THEY CAN DO AND SEE AND BE A PART OF THINGS JUST AS AMAZING AS THIS!” This is indeed why we need to go. I am passionate about my students knowing what is out there in the world of performing arts. I want them to see and experience one of the best and then recalibrate their standards! These students are familiar with the songs from "Wicked" as they have performed some the melodies in band and also have sung some of the pieces in chorus. What a great curriculum tie-in!

In the future, I want my students to search out outstanding professional, college and community performing groups to participate in and to become an active audience for. This trip will begin to show these kids that you CAN get from our own little corner of the world to anywhere! I want them to soak it all in so that it stays with them forever. A few of my students are well on the path to pursuing music education and/or music performance in college and a lifetime career of music to follow. This trip for them is vital as they have never seen a live performance of this caliber! This experience will help all of my students to become better performers and musicians and will also take away fears that some have of spreading their wings when it comes to traveling to visit colleges and universities and stepping out of their comfy zone.

We have worked incredibly hard since September, having raised 65% of the total cost of the trip to cover the bus, NYC meals, lodging, Statue of Liberty ferry tour/Ellis Island Museum, and Times Square group photo. We continue to raise more locally to cover meals "on the road" so students will not need to pull that money directly from their parents' checkbooks. The show ticket costs are a little more than 30% of the experience for each student. Your donations will help to make it possible for my students to watch an incredible Broadway Show in an incredible theater in incredible New York City! There is a lot to do and see in NYC and we need to soak it in! For my students pursuing the performing arts in college and for all others, as well, this opportunity is priceless. Help us to call this a “START-of-a-lifetime" opportunity rather than a "ONCE-in-a-lifetime" opportunity! Thank you for your consideration.
