This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I joined the Patriots in 7th grade because I wanted to be part of a family. The hardest part of running is when you want to give up, but you don't. The Patriots gave me role models to look up to." This is a quote from one of our runners from a yearbook.

Many teams develop a culture all based on winning or losing, but we develop a culture based on hard work and taking on challenges to strengthen one mentally.

In our team's history, we have ran distances ranging from 1500m to even a half marathon! Many teams have tryouts, but we accept all students because no matter what size or level one is, they should still have access to the benefits and joy of running. We train in all sorts of weather, including the rain and snow to develop a strong mindset! We've completed tough challenges such as running five bridges in one day! Our runners treat one another like family members inside and outside of school. We have runners who graduated to high school but still return to help the team out!

My Project

Currently, we try our best to provide each runner access to a watch with a start/stop function to time their workouts. The next thing we're trying to do is for them to reflect on their workout by using watches that have a split lap and memory recall function.

When our runners are doing laps for a long run and/or tempo run, they can use the watches' split lap function to check how fast they're running each lap in real-time.

After running, they can use the memory recall function to view their times for all the laps and to reflect on how well they paced themselves. That is the next phase of development for our runners. They will take turns sharing the two watches that possess these functions. If successful, we hope to provide every runner access to a watch that has a split lap and memory recall function.

In addition, we'll be using the 100-lap watch to time our runners for our 1-mile time trials. Traditionally, we have ten runners for every time trial. I will yell out times when they finish and they'll have to remember it while very tired and write it down on our clipboard. As you can imagine, every time, a few runners will forget their times. If we have the 100-lap watch, I can press the split button every time a runner finishes and use memory recall to check the finish time for all our runners, which will help immensely when they forget their times.
