My Students

Financial literacy is a set of skills that are becoming harder to learn and understand as more people are paying with credit cards and debit cards. My students need authentic experiences using money and they need technology to support these experiences.

Most of my students have not had much experience with money, either because money is scarce in their lives, or because parents do the purchasing.

Some see credit cards used to buy things without recognizing that as a form of money. Financial gifts for children often now come in the form of gift cards, removing a lot of the monetary meaning from purchases. My students do not have experience shopping for the best price, making sure not to spend more than is reasonable, counting money accurately, or making change. The Economics Bazaar involves students researching and designing a product they can make. By running their own businesses, students can count money, make change, advertise, and learn about expenses, payroll, and profit. Each student will: make a prototype; do a market survey; and record the cost of their materials, production space, utilities, and labor. Students will practice counting money and making change. They will create advertisements, and finally, sell their products!

My Project

We will use technology in a variety of ways. First, my students will research potential products on the Internet. They can make a Google form to complete their market survey and use Google presentation to create slides to advertise their product. Google spreadsheets will be used to create reports of expenses and payroll. We will use numerous online games to support learning how to count money and make change. These games give immediate corrective feedback if students are not yet accurate. Students will also engage in online business simulations such as Lemonade Stand to help them learn about costs, price, and profit, or supply and demand. Online videos may be used to learn about manufacturing, assembly lines, and other economic concepts. Chromebooks can give students access to many of these tools. My district just removed the four, dying, desktop computers my students have been struggling with, and Chromebooks are a much less expensive replacement for Internet access.

We have many of the materials we need to make this work, such as plastic money for practice and money board games.

We are willing to support students who need start up costs for their businesses. What we most lack is enough access to technology so that we can authentically integrate it into the work students do to run their businesses. Therefore, we need 8 Chromebooks to provide students with relatively low cost Internet access so that they can use technological tools to support their learning.
