Students in my school come from a wide range of economic levels, and we have a 33% poverty rate. My class is a diverse group in terms of learning styles and cultural/ethnic backgrounds. Their reading levels range from second grade to high school. Some of my students do not have access to technology, books or library cards, so I work hard to get resources into their hands. My classroom is a multiage fourth and fifth grade where I try to develop strong community. The multiage aspect allows all students to experience a chance to be a leader and also gives them times when they are unsure and need help from another student. Both of these experiences are critical to student development, since all students will experience both situations in life. My goal is to make learning relevant to students and respond to the variety of needs and interests students bring. Independent and group projects are one way that I do this.
