As the school year begins, and my Kindergarten students come into their new room and world full of learning, I want to adequately be prepared to meet them in stride with their eagerness. In our classroom, we not only learn academics, but we learn social-emotional skills that help us while learning to get along with a large community of students; for many of my students, this is their first exposure to formal education. I teach at a Title I school.
We begin and end our day together around the rug; this is how important a classroom rug is to our Kindergarten family. We hold community meetings, read alouds, explore math with hands on activities, dance, sing, write and share our learning on the rug. This rug will help our room to be focused and not worry about where they need to be sitting or if a friend is in their spot because they have their own individual square clearly marked; it provides them with their own personal space for learning and growing. This rug will enhance the students' learning and focus while building a stronger community together.
