Our preschoolers are working hard to make connections between numbers and everyday events.\r\nThey are counting how many steps we take from the playground to the classroom, how many books are in their book bags, and how many Goldfish crackers they have at the snack table. We are reading Ten Black Dots, One Golden Rule at School, and Over in the Jungle. The students have made great progress in identifying numbers on the 1-100 number chart. They are currently able to identify numbers up to 45! We have also been giving the children an assortment of shapes and having them sort and count how many triangles and squares they have. Soon, we will be learning about graphing!\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous donations and continued support. Every day, our students use markers to sign in, giving them a meaningful opportunity to practice writing. We use colored paper for a variety of creative art projects. Recently, we created a school bus while singing The Wheels on the Bus. We also added paper and markers to each of our learning stations to encourage children to practice writing through play and exploration. For example, students create menus in our pretend kitchen, draw pictures of how they are feeling in our relaxation station, and sketch ideas for how they want to build their creations at the LEGO table. During outdoor time, we use sidewalk chalk to draw and practice writing. We recently introduced the game hopscotch, which the students have really enjoyed! They love counting, jumping, and practicing their numbers while being active.\r\n\r\nThere are so many ways that writing is becoming a part of our students' everyday learning. The canvas materials brought wonderful opportunities for creative expression, especially during our Mother's Day project where students painted personalized gifts for their families. Each child experimented with brush techniques and color mixing to create their own unique artwork. The cardstock paper has been essential for printing durable reading materials like decodable readers, sight word cards, and phonics games that hold up beautifully through repeated use in our literacy centers.\r\n\r\nWhen my first graders first saw the canvases and colorful paint supplies, their faces absolutely lit up with excitement. They could hardly contain their enthusiasm as they eagerly chose their favorite colors and got ready to create. The bright, engaging materials made the learning experience feel special and memorable. Students took such pride in their finished paintings and couldn't wait to share them with their families, asking over and over when they would get to paint again.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue using these materials to support our ongoing literacy development and science exploration. The organized filing system will help us dive deeper into science topics animal and plants defense, spinning earth, and light and sound. The cardstock will allow us to create new sets of leveled readers matched to each student's reading progress. With the caterpillar life cycle kits, our students became scientists and observers as they explored each stage of the caterpillar's transformation. \r\n\r\nStudents made predictions about what they thought would happen next and recorded their thinking through drawings and early writing. Some students used their AAC devices to find and communicate key words from the story and our science investigation, including butterfly, caterpillar, the days of the week, and different food items the caterpillar ate. It was wonderful to see students connect the words they were learning from the story to their own communication. We used them to explore local buildings with stained-glass features, including those at University of Washington, Town Hall Seattle, and other community landmarks.\r\n\r\nThe different skin tone paper materials helped us create self-portraits. We talked about how each person is unique and beautiful, and that people come in all different skin tones, shapes and sizes. Our preschoolers also learned about how skin helps protect and keep our bodies safe.\r\n\r\nWe added the stickers to our art center, where students were busy creating birthday party invitations.
