This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Students of all ages retain more knowledge when they are given the opportunity to participate in activities. The Science activity tubs provide the materials needed to perform experiments and incorporate the other core subjects and skills such as writing and reading.
My students attend an inner city public Tennessee elementary school located in a high poverty area.
Our school is a Title 1 school, which means the majority of the students are economically and educationally disadvantaged. My students are African American and receive free lunch. Despite the challenges my students face, they are eager to learn. The students are responsible, and can handle these materials successfully.
My project will need the Science in the Tub activities in order to enhance teaching core Science objectives to the students. The tubs contain the materials and activity cards needed to perform experiments so the students can discover the answers for themselves, and in turn retain the information. Students also learn how to work as a team in cooperative groups.
All children deserve to learn.
The majority of my students lack home support, and are not exposed to the zoo or museums. School field trips are too expensive. The students are dependent on the teacher to provide these basic learning experiences. As a primary level teacher it is my goal to expose the students to as many experiences and vocabulary terms as possible, in an effort to encourage them to become lifelong learners. Funding this project will help reach that goal.
