Help me give my students the opportunity to instill SEL and a growth mindset beyond our academic resource classroom by supporting our project for an edible sensory garden. It fosters sustainability and will provide summer support to students.

In my academic resource support class, I work with at-risk youth who inspire me daily with their resilience and eagerness to learn. Each student brings unique strengths and challenges, and it's my mission to provide them with the academic and social support they need to thrive.
Our project aims to create an edible sensory garden, integrating academic skills with social-emotional learning (SEL) principles.
With requested resources like soil, seeds, markers, and gardening tools, students will engage in hands-on learning. They'll prepare their personal garden bucket, plant seeds, label each plant, and tend to them, exploring sustainability, plant life cycles, and environmental stewardship.
Beyond academics, our project fosters SEL competencies and a growth mindset. As students care for the garden, they'll learn patience, responsibility, and teamwork. Witnessing tangible results, like plant growth and vegetable harvest, instills confidence and accomplishment. Moreover, the garden connects our lessons to real-life experiences, enhancing our end-of-year trips to the Eastern Shore to explore Harriet Tubman's legacy and a walking tour of Baltimore through the eyes of Frederick Douglass.
What sets my students apart is their resilience and determination. Despite facing challenges outside the classroom, they consistently demonstrate a thirst for knowledge and support for one another. Creative problem-solvers, they eagerly explore new ideas. With community support and project resources, I believe they'll continue to grow academically, socially, and emotionally, preparing for success both inside and outside the classroom.
