Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Light the Way" is the motto at our school located in Indianapolis. Why are we lighting the way? Our students are proving daily that they are learning so they can light up their own lives. They are happy about lighting up to making a difference in their lives and their communities. Our school is a Pre-K through sixth grade elementary school that serves students who come from low-income households. Our goal is to create life-long learners who will continue to "light up" their own lives and the lives of those around them.
My 3rd graders can be described by thinking about the ABCs.
They are active, brilliant and captivating. My students are active learners and listeners. They thrive best when they are engaged in active learning. They are brilliant because they are learning and applying their knowledge daily. Finally, they are some of the most captivating people I know. They are great storytellers and love being able to share their experiences, stories, and knowledge with others. Not only are these students learning but they are also teachers through their active, brilliant and captivated.
My Project
When students are read aloud great literature, their love for reading only increases. In my 3rd grade class, we have a fantastic reading curriculum that we use. Each week is centered around a wonderful book that we read aloud. All of our activities are connected to that particular book. Students are able to develop a deep understanding of the book and make very rich connections to the text.
The read-aloud books are a vital part of our classroom reading block.
As the year goes on students are able to make connections to other books we have read, which as a teacher is so exciting to witness. Currently, I utilize the public library but this means the books only remain in our classroom for that week. There are so many times students wish they could read one of the read-aloud books during reading time. By having a class set of the necessary picture books, students will be able to enjoy them all year long!
