I currently teach at a great school in a great school district. Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey has uprooted a lot of my students and I have several new students that were affected by the storm move to my school. I teach fourth grade and my students are eager to learn and show great character as we were the first school in the district to be awarded a National School of Character.
In my math class, I am learning that students need more and more of an opportunity to move around and learn in various ways.
I am in the process of re-creating my classroom environment to be more flexible so that students feel more comfortable which will lead to them being more successful.
My Project
For this project I am focusing on adding to my flexible seating that I already have. I have been using flexible seating for the last several weeks and I have seen a significant change in my students attention. The use of the floor and tables with wobble chairs, pillows, and lap tables will be beneficial in helping them learn. They are able to focus more and are excited about having the opportunity to sit in unconventional seats. Many of my students' parents have also communicated that their children have come home and expressed how happy they are to be in a classroom that fosters their learning in this way.
