My Project

My classroom is a converted office space that is an interior room with no source of natural lighting. The students who attend school in this space are only with me on a short-term basis. Every single one of them loves to do hands-on science projects and experiments. One of my favorite to do with students is growing plants. This allows us to explore environments, plant needs, and plant life cycles. However, without access to sunlight, I have been unable to conduct these experiments with my students.

By building a terrarium in our classroom and using daylight quality grow lights, we will be able to benefit from hands-on science as well as the natural-quality light that the terrarium will provide.

Students will be able to study plant life-cycles and grow their own seeds in cups placed within the terrarium. Additionally, they will learn what plants need through discussions and observations of the natural environment being mimicked within the terrarium. Having a living terrarium in the classroom will also allow students to explore different plant habitats being mimicked in the terrarium.
