The students in the Honors Theatre Arts and Honors Play Production will produce a production of Romeo and Juliet. The students will research possibilities, evaluate, and make decisions on all aspects of the production including: setting, time period, costumes, set, music, makeup, stage combat, characterization, script analysis, language and performance. Performances will be offered to the students and public at Smithfield-Selma High School in Smithfield, NC, at the end of the first semester of 2005. During the second semester of the 2005-2006 school year, the play will go on the road to any of the schools in Johnston County who request either the full performance, segments of the play, scenes, or workshops depending on the age group and interest. A study guide developed by the students and myself will go to interested teachers to use before the play or workshop. My request from a donor is for funding for 20 trips as part of the outreach segment of the production. I am the drama teacher at Smithfield-Selma High School which is a public high school in Johnston County, North Carolina. Our High School appears to be a rural school in North Carolina, but actually it has a diverse population with more of an inner city school make up, with a fair representation of many cultures and ethnic groups. Our production may be the only opportunity that many of the students have to see Shakespeare performed as well as the opportunity to talk to the cast and crew of a dramatic production. Shakespeare is part of the curriculum at the schools in Johnston County. Romeo and Juliet is part of the ninth grade course of study for all the schools in the county, and my students have always wanted to perform a Shakespearean play. When I received approval for this course, twenty-five students signed up and are scheduled to participate. My students are excited about all the possibilites, even knowing that they are in for some long hours and demanding work.
