Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Do we have to leave?" Our students are funny, compassionate, and imaginative children that enjoy exploring new skills and developing their literacy skills. They attend an elementary school in the Kensington section of Northern Philadelphia.
The room buzzes throughout the day as they laugh, sing, and share with their peers.
They are a thoughtful, loving, and hardworking bunch, excited to learn and grow. While they are motivated by their dreams and engaged by the opportunities presented to them, due to economic challenges within the community, school, and district, our resources are limited. As their teacher, I struggle to provide sufficient and enriching supplies that will support holistic learning. However, at our school, we are resourceful and do with what we have, but our students deserve and require more.
My Project
This is one of several projects that I am proposing in order to create a "Closet for Change," a closet or space at our elementary school that will have uniforms and other necessary articles of clothing like socks, underwear, and winter accessories available. In my experience thus far, it can be challenging for some families to afford seasonal uniforms, especially since children grow so quickly.
For instance, I have had several students wear long sleeves shirts when it was 80 degrees or higher simply because they did not own a short sleeve uniform shirt.
Imagine their discomfort, wanting to learn and play, but unable to keep cool. Wearing an appropriate shirt for the season will help them focus on their studies, feel more comfortable in class, and with their peers.
