My Students
As I drive to work every morning, I see miles and miles of farmland and the Shawnee National Forest before stopping just before the river at my school. Our enrollment may only be 141, but every single one of my students is important, has a story to tell, and deserves the same educational opportunities as their urban and suburban peers.
My students may come from a small school in the middle of nowhere, but they, too, are our nation's best hope at improving the world we live in.
I teach students who are passionate about learning and bringing positive change to their community. As a class, we focus on growth and learning to be more than the person we were the day before. Whether we're improving in reading, writing, speaking, or even demonstrating skills of empathy and attentiveness, we're always looking for ways to grow and share our stories.
My Project
We have a classroom set of twenty-four laptops that travel from room to room. These laptops are used for any type of activity you can imagine--typing essays, writing stories, studying geography on Google maps, researching scientific innovations, practicing math for the SAT, preparing lab reports, and the list goes on.
Right now, our laptops travel from room to room on a library book return cart where the chargers are held to the cart with duck tape, cardboard tubing, and twine.
Not only does this make our students feel like they don't even matter enough to get a real cart, but it also is unsafe for our laptops, especially as they have to travel outside to go to our STEM classrooms. We are hoping to get a charging cart to hold and protect our laptops so that we can use them for years to come!
