I teach in a small, rural public school with an enrollment of 141. When the parents of my students were in school, we had a large band program that was the pride of our community. Budget cuts and a lack of funding from the state of Illinois have reduced our high school music program to one class period of vocal music, but that doesn't stop us from singing our hearts out. While adding band back in would not be feasible, I want to bring the joy of instrumental music to my kids in the form of ukuleles. As you can see from the picture, five of my students already have their own ukulele, and two ukuleles were donated to my program from a local donor. I would ultimately like to have enough ukuleles that I could transform choir into a class where my students also learn to play the ukulele. Thirty would ensure that all my students (not just those who already have an instrument) would be able to participate.
