Rohr-ing Reading!

Help me give my students books on social justice, growth mindset, culture heritage, immigration and different types of families. My kids need to see their culture, heritage and lifestyle reflected in books.

My Students

My classroom is composed of 21 to 30 multicultural learners a year. Our school has a high mobility rate so in a typical year I have between 21 and 35 students. Many of my students have been newcomers from refugee camps and speak no English, are enrolled as English Language Learners, are part of the special education program, and nearly all of my students have experienced or are currently experiencing trauma in their lives. I do my best to make sure all of my learners feel safe and loved at school. I believe in my students and I know they are a gift to this world.

Our school has over 30 languages spoken and a wide variety of social and academic needs.

The full 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch and are able to take backpacks full of food home on Fridays and during farmer's market weeks. We have a SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) program that allows students to receive further education and dinner instead of being home alone. The teachers at my school are dedicated to their students.

My Project

This project is a collection of highly-engaging, high-quality books that teach students about social justice and real-world situations. Many of my learners are experiencing, have experienced or know someone who has been in social justice situations. For example, the book, "Salt in His Shoes" teaches how Michael Jordan used perseverance to pursuit his dream of playing in the NBA even though adults in his life told him he wouldn't make it to the NBA.

These books will be used in our class library and will be cherished by my 3rd graders.

Not only will this meet their individual needs, it will introduce social issues affecting others in our world. Finally, these books show characters and lifestyles that my students can connect with that are currently missing from our classroom and school library.
