Rocks Rock!

My students need a rock tumbler.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students ROCK! I teach 3rd grade in a Title I school. I try to incorporate as many "being there" experiences as I can during the school year.

Budget restraints and the inability of many of my parents to donate money for any extra materials is the reason for my request. One of my students' favorite units in Science is Rocks and Minerals. By the time it is over, I have nearly EVERY student bringing me rocks to identify! We "create" different types of rocks in the classroom. We visit a mining museum and, by far, the most popular item to purchase is polished rocks. However, many of my students cannot afford even this small souvenir.

I believe a rock tumbler would be a beneficial addition to our classroom for the following reasons: 1. Science: students can bring in their own "special" rocks to be polished 2. Social Studies (character building): a lesson on how an unpolished item that some may think is ugly can, with assistance, become a thing of beauty! 3. Reading/Writing: describe their rock before its transformation; predict how they believe it will look. Write a story about their rocks; share.

The ideas are limitless. I believe that children are so visual in their learning and the fact they can create something in their classroom brings an element of excitement and anticipation. This is priceless!
