My Students

It has often been said that every kid at one time in their life will have a rock collection! Studying rocks and minerals is a fourth grade science unit loved by all. However, without having rock specimens for students, we loose their passion, curiosity, and discovery opportunities.

My students are an amazing group of fourth graders.

Mine, is a traditional classroom of 25 students, which includes the fourth grade-gifted cluster. Within my classroom, I have a wide range of individual needs that I must address. It is my responsibility to guide my students to reach their fullest potential, challenging their individual development, whether they are below, at, or above their grade level. It is important for their learning environment to be intriguing, supportive, and motivating. Even though there is wide learning diversity among themselves, they demonstrate a deep sense of community and caring on a daily basis. Many of my students are eager to devour new knowledge. This excitement for learning is amazing to witness and I am honored to work with these fourth graders each day.

My Project

Fourth graders must know how to differentiate among igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks by referring to their properties. They must be able to identify common rock-forming minerals, such as: quartz, calcite, and feldspar. Having a classroom set of different types of rocks, minerals, and fossils will allow me to create and utilize hands-on science centers. Students will have the opportunity to visit each rock and mineral center where they can observe similarities and differences. They will be able to perform scientific tests on different rock specimens. For example, testing the hardness of a metamorphic rock. Most importantly, students will be able to physically hold and observe each rock type. These types of hands-on learning experiences encourage excitement for studying the science core!

Students need activities in earth sciences that ignite the passion for discovery!

Once we have captured their passion and excitement for discovery, learning the content comes naturally.
