Rocks and Soil Science Materials

My students need to have collections of the different types of rocks to help them learn about them. They also need books to help them learn more about rocks.

My Students

My students love bringing in rocks to share with the class during our study of rocks. However most of the rocks are all one type. I would like my students to be able to compare the different types of rocks and then take that information to classify the rocks they bring in.

I teach First Grade in a Title I, or high poverty school.

I have wonderful students who steal my heart away every day. They are happy, loving, and excited to learn. My students are also full of questions. My goal is to help them continue to question by using their questions to direct my instruction and allowing them time to explore and research.

My Project

My students need to have collections of the different types of rocks to help them learn about them. They also need books to help them learn more about rocks. I plan to use these materials with an approach called CORI (Concept oriented reading instruction). While, CORI is usually used in middle schools,I have found it a wonderful way to make reading instruction come alive for my reluctant readers while studying science. Then by providing hands-on experiences with rocks, I am allowing my students to work on their critical thinking skills and take charge of their own learning.

This project is important to me because it will motivate my students to learn by providing hands-on materials.

I want my students to be active learners. I have been able to collect some science items and do this approach with another unit and it changed my students and me. It truly is an amazing experience to walk into a first grade classroom and see the students actively researching, problem solving, and loving learning.
