Rocking Away the Trauma

My school is located in a small town on a large Indian Reservation in Montana.

About 50% of my students are Native American from different tribes across the state. Many of my students come from homes with limited resources. My school is uniquely pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st grade. We are fortunate to be able to focus on early childhood education and developmentally appropriate practices.

My Project

In our current society, we see many kids affected by some sort of trauma. It may be something like moving to a new school or parents going through a divorce to more serious things like abuse (physical or emotional) or drugs in the home. As a classroom teacher, children come to me from a variety of backgrounds and situations. I am constantly trying to increase my own knowledge and provide different ways to help these students calm their minds and bodies so they can learn.

The rocking motion soothes the brain and facilitates concentration along with the ability to think logically, which provides overall better cognitive processing.

Rocking helps students who are experiencing a brain state of high arousal (hyper-vigilance) to be able to transition to a much more calm brain state to enhance his/her ability to learn and problem-solve. Having a rocking chair available in my classroom will help those students who have been affected by trauma self-regulate, calming their emotions, and preparing their bodies and brains for learning.
