I teach fourth and fifth grade Title I reading in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma. My students are a diverse group with varied levels of learning that are pulled out daily to learn new reading skills in our reading intervention lab. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunch.
These students have huge hearts and love to learn in non-traditional ways such as room transformations, integrating the arts into our lessons, and project-based learning.
My students have curiosity, creativity, compassion, and positive attitudes. They are truly amazing people. My school is wonderfully supportive of the active hands-on learning that we do in our classroom. I couldn't ask for a better learning environment for these students. We are truly a community!
My Project
Research has proven that the use of flexible seating increases attentiveness. We will use the rocker chairs in one of our reading groupings to give added support and increase engagement. This will allow students to still move as they engage in reading, helping them focus on the task at hand.
My students have benefited from flexible seating options in our classroom and I am excited to give my students more options.
I can also use the flexible seating options as an opportunity to encourage students to work in small groups as they complete tasks. We have many students that struggle with sitting still and still being able to focus. These chairs will be a huge motivation to them.
We use Whole Brain Teaching methods as we learn, and these chairs will facilitate my students as they turn and teach each other, and as they move around the room to join others in discussions!
