I love my students love and enthusiasm to learn music especially with instruments. Any time I mention at the start of a lesson that they will use instruments they CHEER. I work in a full Title School and over 16 languages are spoken currently among our student body. Music with instruments transcends language so profoundly that it establishes a sense of community when we finally play together. I intentionally used instruments in the school talent show last year so that parents and the community could also observe how diverse music is in elementary school.
I teach all my students how music has building blocks and how they work together. Composing is now a new focus in music in elementary school in our school district. They will be learning what composing is in my class. These glockenspiels will allow students time to compose their own music and develop confidence in performing on an instrument. This will deepen their understanding of the building blocks of music of rhythm, melody, expression, texture and timbre and how all contribute to making their music more interesting and fun. Finally, after making a composition of their own they will learn to improvise on each others song and on program music used in our classroom.
