Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm so fortunate to be looping with my students from last year, watching them rise from juniors to seniors. Last year (and for the past 3 before that) I was teaching Algebra 2 and now I'll be moving into the Environmental Science role. My kiddos are smart, super sweet, and many will be the first in their families to go to college. Most of my students are of color and are low income, some even have recently moved to the United States and learned English.
My Project
When talking about the rock cycle and geology, being able to touch what we are talking about makes such a difference. This lab kit provides a multitude of different rocks, minerals and fossils to identify and observe. My students are urban kids who don't get much of an opportunity to go out into nature (something we will change this year), which means that manipulatives in the classroom are so much more important. Imagine my students settled in groups of 2-3 identifying rocks and minerals. Imagine them arguing and using reasoning to defend their thinking! Help me give the kids another opportunity for learning science.
