My Students

Help my students put their music skills to good use by learning to play the recorder!

I am a general music teacher in a high poverty elementary school.

Although my students’ resources are limited, they love music! It is a universal language that can be spoken and understood by all people regardless of their backgrounds. Studies also show us that students who actively participate in strong music programs do better in other academic subjects such as math and science. In music class, the students enjoy exploring all areas of music like singing, playing rhythm instruments, and learning about composers, but they especially enjoy practicing their music reading skills and performing. Many students express an interest in learning how to play an instrument, but because of their parental involvement and/or socio-economic status, they are not afforded the opportunity to do so.

My Project

I am looking to purchase recorders to be used with my elementary students. This will allow them to put into practice all of the music reading skills we are constantly working on, as well as create performance opportunities. These performance opportunities will boost the self-esteem of my students, and teach them to take pride in their achievements. It will also give them a sense of accomplishment in learning to play an instrument and as well as performing songs on it for an audience. To ensure the safe keeping of these instruments, they will be stored at school and used only during music class. Each student will be assigned an instrument that will be theirs to use for the duration of the year, then at the end of the year, the recorders will be cleaned and disinfected so that future students will be able to experience the joy of learning to play an instrument.

Your assistance will help to make the goal of teaching all of my students to play an instrument a reality, in addition to fostering a lifelong love of music in them.
