Rockin' Out with Rock Poetry

My students need a video MP3 player to aid in their study of rock poetry.

Michigan City, IN Grades 6-8

I teach seventh-grade reading at a middle school with a population of 77% free and reduced lunch. Our middle school, which used to be a high school and was converted in 2003 to house 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, has about 700 students. I teach three different levels of reading classes, based on standardized-testing scores. My goal is to improve their comprehension skills, as well as their love of reading, by differentiating instruction. With all of my classes, I try to pick instruction that uses technology and media that they appreciate, to draw them in, so they can appreciate literature at a deeper level.

Poetry. Most students groan when I tell them it's time to study it. But, in Miss G's classroom poetry is an experience. Being a huge music fan myself, I got an idea during my student teaching seven years ago. 'What if I taught poetry using music? Students like music. I like music. I want to give it a shot!' My supervising teacher told me he didn't think it would work, but he let me try it anyways. Not only did the students gain valuable knowledge about poetry, and the history behind our rock poetry, but the unit was a ROCKIN' success! Since then, I have been able to add to and extend my Rock Poetry unit every year. My students are so techno-savvy, it would make this unit a snap to have a video MP3 player to use not only the MP3 to listen to the poetry being performed, but to be able to upload music videos as well for a top-notch listening experience.

It would enhance our poetry listening experiences to have a video MP3 player. The Rock Poetry unit is something my students enjoy every year, and ask about when they are no longer my students. "Miss G, are you doing that Rock Poetry thing with your students this year?" That is an excited YES! It is a unit that I look forward to every year, because I am a music-lover myself. This unit ties literary devices and academic discussion of poetry with selections from all genres of "rock poetry" from country, rock, classic rock, alternative, to hip hop. I will be able to bring them video clips of interviews of the artists. Through these clips, the artists discuss why they are writers, and how they write. This will further extend my students' understanding of not only poetry, but of the practicality of the writing process. The students who aren't generally exposed to different types of music, are able to appreciate the art of poetry, while listening to the music, or watching the music video. By the end of the unit, students are begging me to play artists like The Beatles and Harry Chapin during work time in class. How many thirteen year olds beg to listen to classic rock voluntarily?

You will make it possible for me to provide my students with the resources they need for a first-class unit. I will be able to bring them not only audio files of the poetry that we are studying, but video clips of the artists and the poetry's performances. Also, the audio and video resources I need will be able to be stored in one place, which is also very helpful!
