Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Diamonds in the rough, that's how I think of my students. They are small pieces of hardworking beauty amidst the chaos of the environment in which they live. These children come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and I'm striving to increase their learning and growth with the continued love and support and tolerance that we give to each other. With each day, these children surprise me and I strive to surprise them!
My hope is always to help children feel worthy and welcome.
In an effort to do this well, I constantly strive to provide opportunities for children to become the teachers to their peers. Putting these materials in the hands of my children will allow them to teach and learn while creating an environment of tolerance and sharing.
My Project
The old fashioned "sit still and be quiet" is not the way my students learn. I want them to be moving, engaged, talking productively and working together. Flexible seating is one of the best ways to support these ideas. In my classroom I have a variety of seating that I have experimented with and the level of engagement increases when the students are comfortable.
Fidgeting is a normal "kid thing" and allowing for safe movement while seated decreases the amount of behavioral corrections, allowing for increased instructional focus.
These chairs will allow for gentle rocking motion which will hopefully increase focus and productivity. I am so eager to see my students faces when they see these chairs in our classroom.
